Attended the Coronation of TRM Arch and Runa and it was an exciting and amazing day. Congratulations toJahan ara bint al-Yehya amat al-Hafeeza, Galen Sandra Scott, on her elevation to the Order of the Pelican in a heartfelt ceremony. Congratulations also to THL SaehildR, SarahJean Meyer, on being installed as a Service Champion for HM Runa. Way to go North Woods! Thank you to Their Graces, Duke Ullr and Duchess AnneLyse van Gavere for their time and love on and for the Dragon Throne. And to TRM Arch and Runa, Draco Invictus! One Midrealm!

We traveled to Middle Marches for a 67 degree day. A month later, we went to Andelcrag for a 41 degree day. Eventho this has been moved due to Covid to spring, it was a day like 12th Night, cold but at least there was no snow and the skies were clear with the sun shining. It was another opportunity for us to wear our winter garb.
It was a pleasant day for us as we spent time with our cousins Ramon and Zubaida and from Roaring Wastes Louis and Sabd. We had time to speak with many of our friends, seeing some for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. Many good conversations were shared.
This was completed with a delightful North Indian feast by Mistress Ilaira degli Attavante and her staff. The feast was "a fusion of Indian and Persian cultures." It one of the better feasts we have experienced.

We traveled to Middle Marches for a 67 degree day. A big change from what we have been experiencing in North Woods! (highs in the 50s) We can to honor Baron Talymar gan y Lluwynn and Baroness Melisande de Marmande as they stepped down for a well deserved rest and passed the Barony to their heirs Baron Uilleag Balbhán and Baroness Slany bean Uillic. We know they are leaving the barony in good hands.
As this is the first of the Pennsic War practices, it was brought home the need for recalibrating our blows as armored combatants. His Majesty stated "When you are on the field - you are fighting a friend. You do not send they away after a bout injured or hurting. Recalibrate your blows down." General of the Midrealm Army Sir Palamor stated "Excessive blows will result in a conversation that will nor end well for you."
One member of North Woods received the honor of being selected by Her Highness Runa as Her Service Champion when becoming Queen - SaehildR barngodR. For those of us who know her in North Woods, her service is no surprise.
Again Their Majesties encourage the populace to come to events as they feel comfortable. Do not feel compelled to attend otherwise. They and we only ask you reach out to each other and us for support and comfort as we are One Midrealm.

Wintery Outdoor 12th Night! It was cold, but the sun was shining and there was snow on the ground, Viking games, snow ball fights, hot chocolate, crackling fires, awards from TRM, a new Pelican made, vigil ordered, apprentices and squires made, and many good conversations with great friends. Thank you to everyone who worked to make the event happen and to all who came and made it an amazing day.
Due to the cold, Their Majesties Uller and AnneLyse held several short courts throughout the day. Several members of North Woods received Beacons at the event. This is an Royal Augmentation of Arms - a beacon aflame granted by the Crown for service during the recent plague. Your Baron and Baroness are humbled to be recipients. We feel it is not service when you are just keeping up with family. We cannot repeat enough that we are in this together and if there is anything we can do to help, please reach out. As Their Majesties phrase it - We are ONE Midrealm!
The high note was reached when Warder Michael McKay was placed on vigil. We are looking forward to being there for a long overdue recognition as he is elevated to the Order of Defense. For Vigilant Michael - HOW-OOOOO!

Wassail was postponed this year as our former Baron of North Woods Angus Gove MacKinnon was knighted in the East Kingdom. He received the North Woods Chain and Sir Einarr Dunwulf Bjornsen of North Woods had his hand on the sword as the oath was given. For our newest North Woods Knight - HOW-OOOO!
Merry Christmas North Woods! We hope this finds everyone in good health and enjoying the day in what ever manner you choose. May you find joy in company and peace in solitude. May you experience kindness and good will. May your hearts find solace and and your minds find calm. We raise a glass in tribute to TRM, to TRH, and to the amazing people of North Woods! One Midrealm! Draco Invictus!

There was a full day of classes on all things Medieval. The Baroness spent time as an instructor as well as student (ask her about Pooh, Pooh, Pooh - I See You! and This Class Stinks!) And No Limits!: Accommodating all ages and abilities was taught by SaehildR barngodR.
Some members of North Woods made us proud as they received scrolls including a couple that will be delivered later as they were not in attendance.

Greetings North Woods! We spent the weekend in the Barony of Carraig Ban attending the Coronation of Ullr and AnneLyse. Long live TRMs!
It was a longer drive to get there than to return as the roads on Friday evening were crowded. The weather was temperate with a somewhat aggressive breeze. There was a great deal of fighting, both armored and rapier, to watch. HM Ullr gave about an hour “class” on rapier spear.
It was good to see many friends on such an auspicious and long-awaited day. Pentamere was well represented for such a distant event.
We are very grateful for the service, support, and love shown to the Kingdom by The previous Majesties, Felix and Madeleina. May they enjoy some well earned rest.

This was a day of mixed emotions. We had expected to see Their Majesties, however after traveling all the way to Donnershafen at the last minute they were not able to attend. We were able to spend a day with our cousins from Cynnabar and Roaring Wastes. Áindle was able to take Baron Louis and Baroness Sabd to the thrown weapons range where the Marshals kept the range open late for us to participate in the activities. Our thanks to all the thrown weapons Marshals for the opportunity to throw our axes and knives. Baroness Aliyah was happy to visit the merchants as it was good to see them in person at an event.
A regency court was held in the stead of Their Majesties led by the Barons of Cynnabar. During the court, Baroness Aliyah interrupted the court to present a scroll that had been previously given in virtual court to a very worthy gentle. This did cause a stir in court – especially in response to Baron Óláfr’s attempt to regain control of the court was responded to with “You cannot tell me what to do. You are not the King!” (This response was given by Aliyah under the direction of His Majesty Felix.) Baroness Aliyah followed this presentation by calling Baron Óláfr into court to receive a Purple Fret for his work as Feast Stewart at Cynnabar’s Ruby Jubilee. The scroll was in the form of a white linen apron with the words of the scroll in Runes embroidered in red silk thread around the edge. There was a pocket holding a wooden spoon of Box Elder hand-carved and donated by Lord Thomas Throckmorton with the Purple Fret painted on the handle by Baroness Aliyah in 22K shell gold and gouache. Baron Óláfr knew he was getting an award as they were holding the court but was expecting a standard scroll. He was overwhelmed by the 'scroll' he received as well as the award.

It was a very hot day we spent with our cousins Baron Louis and Baroness Sabd in the lands of our Riding of Hawkland Moor. The breeze was what made the day comfortable. Áindle and Aliyah took the opportunity to try out Áindle's new throwing knives and axes. Áindle also shot a few rounds of arrows.
Thanks to Master Max, Áindle was able to try out the new spears for Rapier. NOTE: In his discussions of the new rules regarding rapier with Master Max and the Pentamere Rapier Marshal Warder Michael McKay, Áindle was corrected in his inspection of the tips of the swords. The new rules do not require metal under the rubber. Rubber and polymer tips must have a minimum of 1/8” (3 mm) between the striking surface and the tip or edge of the sword.

WealdLake hosted a Medieval Days Demonstration for the kids and adults at the Brighton Friendship Center Daycare. This was the second demonstration, with no demonstration last year due to COVID restrictions. There was dancing, embroidery, two versions of Smelly Science (plaque bags and soap), whip-cording, storytelling by the Honorable Lord Finnian McFinn, virtual activities (via You Tube) such as Virtual Drumming by Lady Celestria de Cranham and a Baronial Court.

Illuminated scrolls by Baroness Aliyah were given to some of the children based on recommendations of the Friendship Center staff. The Helping Hands (those who have finished second grade) received the Council of Wolves for their assistance in preparing the beading kits for Crown Tournament. They made over 150 kits. The staff received rings (candy) as tokens of appreciation of their support and assistance. The Honorable Lady Siri Toivosdotter, Lady Odelia of White Waters and The Honorable Lady Aine Óconnail received Awards of the Wind Swept Path for their service at Demonstrations.

It was a wonderful day to see old friends and new in person. So much better than that small, sometimes glitchy, square in the Ethereal Realm. It was a beautiful day for archery with only a short shower in the afternoon to give the smurfs a chance to scatter. However, even with that soaking break the archers were still on target. We were joined by our cousins from Cynnabar - Barons Óláfr and Malachy. It was a chance for Baron Malachy to greet old friends as he began as member of the Riding of Hawkland Moor and North Woods before moving to the Barony of Cynnabar. Our cousins joined in the fun by adding their own challenge so their archery champion would have a chance to represent them. It was a Shoot-to-Kill challenge and added great sport to the day.
As we are still in the process of celebrating our 50th, Baroness Aliyah had a Golden Challenge. This was a 10 yd target shoot at Flamingos (+5pts for gold / -2pts for pink). It was in homage to Mistress Grazia Geralda Louisa de Navarra.
We have heard of the kindness and caring of our populace for each other. Therefore, we established a new award - The Golden Pearl. The first recipients were presented with their awards at this event.

As your representatives of North Woods, we attended the Midrealm Crown Tournament. It was a well fought tournament with the Heir in doubt to the very last round as Duke Ullr Amaranthanson and Duke Cellach Mac Cormaic were tried. Duke Ullr prevailed and is the new Heir to the Dragon Throne with his lady AnneLyse van Gavere. Draco Invictus!
All SCA mandated restrictions were in place. Their Majesties encouraged mask wearing, however did not require it. Those attending were very respectful of each other with social distancing, asking permission before hugging, and not sharing food and drink.
There were Rapier and Armored tournaments in the afternoon prior to the afternoon court. Áindle did fight rapier after having been prepared by a practice at Ealdnordwuda earlier in the week. Overall, it was a pleasure to see everyone in person and experience an event under the current restrictions.
We encourage everyone to become involved as your comfort level dictates. We hope to see you in person soon, however we do understand if you choose to wait. Please stay engaged and continue to care for each other. Once more we'd like to encourage everyone to reach out and check on those you miss. If you think of someone, for whatever reason, we are asking you to take that split second of thought and turn it into action. Send them a text or email or make a phone call. Our first order of Baronial business was to thank all of our Baronial Officers who have just completed a term of service to the Barony. We truly appreciate your contributions. That means we have new and remaining Baronial Officers. We look forward to serving beside you - Brigida Aldoratti, new Webminister; Antoinette de Martel, new A&S Minister; Châtelaine, Hlin Kollisdottir formerly Dana (Danahild nic Choluim); and Maximilian der Zauberer staying on as Seneschal. Thank you all!
Happy 50th North Woods! We feel like that party was a bust. But, even though we didn't get to celebrate as we planned, the Barony has passed a milestone. Hopefully, we will get to celebrate it together sometime sooner rather than later. So for now, we are putting away the party hats and streamers. We want to thank everyone who participated in the #NW50Gold challenges. We look forward to the next 50 years as the Premiere Barony of the Middle Kingdom.
We are approaching a year since the world turned upside down and we would like to share a few thoughts: we know that there are folks out there struggling in many ways. It has been a hard year for many in many different ways. We are very aware that darkness and doubt thrive in situations such as these and once more we'd like to encourage everyone to reach out and check on those you miss. It is easy to get caught up in just getting by one day at a time and we really do understand that. But, if you think of someone, for whatever reason, we are asking you to take that split second of thought and turn it into action. Send them a text or email or make a phone call. Drop a note in the mail if their not tech connected. It can mean so much.
The SCA has not yet made any decision about opening up for events and such. Some plans are going forward "just in case we can" with a virtual plan as well. Whatever comes, we know that things will change. We want North Woods to be ready for that change. With that in mind we would are going to change things up a bit. Instead of holding monthly virtual courts, we would like, for the time being, to become a bit less formal. So, on the first Sunday of every month at noon, we would like to invite all members and friends of North Woods to join us virtually for Sunday Brunch (obviously it BYOBrunch). This will be an opportunity to get together, chat like we do after court, keep connected, and make plans. We can share information and support one another moving forward as a Barony. We are asking, for at least one volunteer from each canton to become a member of the B&B Brunch Cabinet. The purpose of this cabinet is to advise us on the future of North Woods. What do you want to see in the next 6 months, the next year, the next 5 years? How can we support each other as individual cantons? How can we work together more as a Barony? We want to know. We want to know what you want to see happen in the Barony as it is now and as we move toward re-opening. We believe the best way to do this is to stimulate conversations within each canton. You know that we believe one of the great strengths of North Woods is the individuality of her cantons. That is why we want these discussions to happen at the canton level. We hope this will enable those who may not like the virtual realm to have their voices heard. Then, ideas can be shared and maybe we can begin to make some plans for moving forward. Things are different. Things have changed and they are going to continue to change. We want these changes in North Woods to reflect the needs, wants, hopes, and desires of its people.
Right now, there are a lot of on-line opportunities for those who desire to stay virtually active. Pennsic University, Virtual Val Day, It Takes My Child to Virtually Raze a Village are just a few of the more locally sponsored opportunities. There are many more from all over the Knowne World not just Midrealm. Take a look at the Pale for more information. It is now free for any one to read on the SCA.org website. The virtual realm has definitely widened our opportunities to share with folks we might never have ever encountered before.
Until we can meet again in person, we wish for you all to be safe and well!

We began our court with a toast to Their Royal Majesties King Felix and Queen Madeleina.
On October 17th, Their Royal Majesties held court in the Ethereal Midrealm. It is our duty to share with you the business of that Court. Effective September 25, 2020, Mackenzie Levi, known as Leviathan, is temporarily removed from participation in the SCA.
The #NWGold50 challenge for September was a Bardic Challenge and Her Excellency added a North Woods inspired Fall display for the October challenge. The Bardic Challenge was met with several stories and song, but a tale of witches and persecution from the time of Scotland's King James VI - late 16th C especially caught The Baroness' attention. Angus Folksinger shared this as a Halloween read. If you haven't checked it out, it is very long, but very interesting. Congratulations Lord Angus for winning the #NWGold50 Bardic Challenge. The Fall Display Challenge was met with a lovely display by nature photographed by Mistress Fionna. The delicacy of the plant and the colors were amazing. Congratulations Mistress Fionna!
#NWGold50 Challenge for November is simple. The Baroness has made a #NWGold50 post in the Barony of North Woods Facebook page. It asks this question: "What are you the most thankful for within your North Woods SCA experience, excluding people?" To participate, just post a comment or email The Baroness at North Woods dot excellencies at Midrealm dot org.
This month we honored the work of the Arts and Sciences Officers. As we are a 5013c organization, teaching is important to retaining our 5013c non-profit educational organization status. They deserve much appreciation for dealing with the cumbersome and confusing reporting process they have to use.
We recognize the Canton's A&S Officers for their service with an award of the Wind Swept Path.

You will note the Baronial A&S Officer is missing. That position is held by The Baroness. The Baronial Officer positions opening up. They are Seneschal, Châtelaine, Minister of Arts and Sciences, and Webminister. The position of Minister of Youth also remains open. Please consider running for one of these offices. The work is rewarding when you serve our barony. Just contact Baron Max if you have any questions or want to throw your hat in the ring.
We are very proud and pleased to announce that the Middle Kingdom has a new Kingdom Minister of Youth - THL Silly. Congratulations Honorable Lady SæhildR barngodR, we know you will be amazing.
Our next Home Court will be Sunday, December 6th at 6:00 pm. Looking at the holidays coming up, we thought it would be best to move to the first of the month. Rather than have two back-to-back, we just merged the October and November courts into one in November. There were no entries for the September challenge. So the #NWGold50 Challenge for October will remain the Bardic Challenge from September. Our hope is to get material that may ultimately be used for the actual North Woods 50 celebration. Here's a recap of the challenge: Extra points for including a campfire. Sing me a song, recite a poem, or tell me a story. You can read me a period tale that fits your persona or tell me a North Woods "So, there I was ..." story. Use something published or original and Tag it #NWGold50.If that is uninspiring, then the new, October #NWGold50 Challenge will be to create a North Woods inspired Autumn decoration. Carve or decorate a North Woods inspired pumpkin or gourde; make a door wreath or a porch display. As always, we are wide open to your own interpretation. Be creative and have fun!
This month we'd like to honor those who help keep us connected. The folks take on jobs that are highly visible, but not all are really seen. We are talking about the Webministers, Social Media Liaisons, and Heralds. We see the outcome - highly visible for Web and Social Media; but their actual work is behind the scenes. The Heralds, on the other hand, are seen and heard in all their capacities.
The webministers:

Caitilin Logan (Hawkland Moor)
Paiva Kaukotar (Ealdnordwuda)

Heralds:

You may have noticed that WealdLake is missing from the list of honorees. That's because the Webminister for WealdLake is His Excellency. His Excellency is also a Herald-at-large.

As has become our tradition in the virtual courts, we opened court with a toast to Their Majesties - King Felix and Queen Madeleina.
While we are still restricted in the -Midrealm through the end of January 2021, we want to commend everyone who has made an effort to stay connected within the SCA. Some folks have done that through the virtual realm and others have done it through more "archaic" methods. Virtual meetings, virtual A&S gatherings, virtual challenges, virtual courts, and virtual shenanigans have been keeping our hobby alive for the past six months. We completely recognize and respect that for various reasons, these are not for everyone; and yet for others, it has allowed greater participation. Some folks find no appeal in the virtual realm; and that's perfectly fine. Even in person, not everyone participates or finds their fun in the same activities. Many of these folks have still found ways to stay active and keep in touch - through phone calls, small groups of friends socially distant and in compliance with local ordinances, and mail. Others may have even found respite in this unexpected hiatus. It's all okay. You do you! Continue to support each other by whatever means necessary and comfortable. We are so glad that the SCA has not been forgotten or lost during these unexpected times. We hope that what we are doing helps and we encourage everyone to find ways to keep their enthusiasm, interest, and passion in things medieval alive.
Their Royal Majesties Felix and Madeleina held a virtual Midrealm Court yesterday where they gave out several awards and even did a virtual elevation. It, like all the others can be found on the Kingdom of the Middle You-Tube channel. As a part of the voice of the Midrealm Crown to the good people of North Woods, I want to share that TRM have been encouraging people to consider holding office - locally, regionally, or even at the kingdom level. In particular, they are encouraging those who have never held office to please consider doing so. It is a great way to serve, in most cases it does not take a great deal of time, and there are many folks who will help teach and guide you if you so desire. The Barony has some offices open and a few more opening soon. Please consider, especially in this slower hobby time, perhaps undertaking one of these jobs or becoming a deputy to someone.
We have lately been focusing each court on a specific area in the SCA - A&S in June, Martial in July, and today we would like to recognize some folks for Service.
For one of the most thankless jobs- Seneschal. We have six on our Barony:
Maximilian der Zauberer - Baronial
Damiana Isabel Cardona -
Hawkland Moor
Brigida Alderotti - Ealdnordwuda
Odelia of White Waters - WealdLake
Morgan End Starre - Fearann na Criche
Celestria de Cranham - Altenberg
We would like to recognize these current Seneschals with the Award of the Wind Swept Path for their service and dedication.
But, there is another position that requires a significant commitment and dedication - the Exchequers. Again, there are six in our Barony:
Morgaine NicFhrannsaidh - Baronial
Gwenllyn the Minstrel - Hawkland Moore
Gwynneth Featherstone - Ealdnordwuda
Aine Óconnail - WealdLake
Kriemhilt von Ebersberg - Fearann na Criche
Faoiltigherna ni Bhroain - Altenberg
Honor these folks for keeping count with the Award of the Wind Swept Path.
There is one more person that your Baroness wants to make sure we recognize today. This good gentle does not always serve without complaint or grumbling. Set-up, tear-down, Event Steward for many years of one or more events, teaching, retaining, guard duty, seam ripping, technology, proof-reading, and listening (sometimes). In addition to all the above, this would all be more difficult with the help of THL SaehildR, we thank you with all our love and an Award of the Wind Swept Path.
Happy 50th North Woods! The challenge for August was based on "Back to School" and focused on learning/teaching. Please allow me to tell you a little story. In 1977, I found the SCA in a place called Dearn Ansilet. It was a relatively small group of folks that met in the back yard of an Ann Arbor home with impressive grounds and a large pond. Picture, if you will, carpet armor and bucket helms in fighting practice on the upper lawn. Near the pond was a group of women sitting in woven mesh lawn chairs speaking of sheep, shearing, carding, spinning, dying, weaving, making garb. I was just 19, a self-supporting impoverished student living in a small apartment with two others. These ladies were intense - too much in fact! Fast forward a quarter of a century. I have been dragged, reluctantly, back to the middle ages. At one of the first events we attended there was this A&S display. It had garb, accessories, tools, and documentation that was amazing, not only in its depth, but also in its organization. I have always said that presentation is everything, and I saw a kindred spirit, but WOW! I have seen this gentle in action and WOW! I have learned much from this person and give them my utmost regard and respect. Mistress Antoinette de Martel, for her teaching fishing at Pennsic and ITMCTRAV - you are the #NWGold50 Challenge winner for August! She will be receiving this commemorative coin and some other fishy surprises. Thank you!
#NWGold50 Challenge for September is inspired by missing Pennsic and recent evenings around a campfire. It is a Bardic Challenge. Extra points for video with a campfire. Sing me a song or tell me a story. You can read me period tale that fits your persona or tell me a "So, there I was ..." story. Poetry is also appropriate. If you are participating virtually, remember to tag it #NWGold50. If you are in touch with non-virtual folks, we will accept entries by mail - just make sure you mark it #NWGold50.

Baronial Court held by Áindle and Aliyah, Baron and Baroness of North Woods.
Court was opened with a toast to Their Majesties.
We reminded everyone that all SCA events and martial activities are canceled until the end of July. (NOTE: The following week, all SCA events and martial activities were canceled until January 31, 2021.) We reviewed the restrictions in place for group meetings. Then we went to Awards as noted below.
The Shimmering Leaf was awarded to Ivarr of Altenberg. Baron Áindle made a challenge to all the brewers, vintners and cordial makers to make a something special to celebrate North Woods 50th. The only limiting factor was nothing with a pine taste. Ivarr met the challenge with Hidden Gold Beer. It was enjoyed by the Baron as throughout the court as it was used for the opening toast. The Golden Trope was awarded to Baroness Gwendolyn for her contributions and accomplishments in music on the recommendation of our A and S Champion - Lady Siri. The Biting Wolves were given those serving behind the scenes as Marshals for our cantons and Barony.
A reminder was made to all the fighters - Armored and Rapier - to make sure you have your waiver on file with the Clerk of the Roster. It will be required to participate in practices and events.
The Baroness announced her North Woods 50th challenge winner for July. June's #NWGold50 Challenge was to show the Baroness pictures of your North Woods. Pictures of anything that meant North Woods to you. She loved what you showed her and would like to acknowledge the beauty and charm of all the entries. Honorable mention to THL SaehildR who entered an amazing collage of photos and Isabel Taylor who caught that special moment from our Investiture as Baron and Baroness. The winner of this July's #NWGold50 Challenge was really hard to choose. The other entries were amazingly pretty or emotionally moving, and truly inspiring, but one stood out to me as an attribute of North Woods that sometimes causes problems, but is one of its greatest strengths. We are a Barony with five cantons, beautiful lands, many talents, and many opinions. Our cantons comprise our Barony and are unique unto themselves. They give us great diversity of strengths as well as divisiveness of strength. But when all is said and done - We are family! Therefore, congratulations to THL Fujinami No Kaede for her picture of the Ealdnordwuda Pennsic family.
The Baroness then announced the Challenge for August. #NWGold50 Challenge for August is inspired by Back-to-School! Post about something that you have learned during your time in the SCA. It can be a photo, a drawing, a performance video, a brief summary, or even a link to a virtual class, Virtual Pennsic University is up and running, you took and would like to encourage others to take. You have until the Saturday, August 29th, the day before August's Home Court on Sunday, Aug 30th at 7:00 pm to post or email me. Remember to tag it #NWGold50.

We began court by passing on the Restrictions as proclaimed by the Crown related to COVID-19.
We were proud to announce two groups as recipients of the Council of Wolves award. The first is the Pentamere Harp Choir. They have impressed the Baroness quite a bit and she'd like to see more of them. The baroness finds them amazing! They gave their first performance at It Takes My Child to Raze a Village XI in 2019. The group also taught at St. Cecilia at the Tower and performed at Tyger Hunt. The second group was an ad hoc group formed for a specific purpose, showed amazing collaboration throughout Pentamere, demonstrated a wide range of talents and achieved their goal - The Pentamere Feastware Group. All members of either group are welcome to contact us at North Woods. Excellencies@Midrealm.org to request a patch.
NW recently and suddenly lost one of its very talented musicians to cancer. We feel that we were just beginning to see how much this noble man had to offer. He was quiet and avoided the limelight, but he was gifted in so many ways and he was starting to blossom. We don't want his gift or his memory to be forgotten. It is with great sadness of heart but joy in the doing, that we present Cailin's Golden Trope Award for contributions, accomplishments, and inspiration in music. For those of you who don't know, in the most simple terms, a music Trope is a musical or lyrical addition or substitution. Lord Cailin was most certainly an addition. The Premiere Recipients of the Award are Siri Toivosdotter, Beline Nervenartz and Angus Folksinger.
We announced the winner of this month's North Woods 50th Golden Challenge - Lord Piotr Arslan Danilov. The challenge was to create something inspired by the Barony using only what you already had at home and to post it to Facebook. Lord Piotr Arslan Danilov performed "Riu Riu Chio" as he learned it from Lord Cailin and he cited the "el lobo" lyric which brought to mind the Barony. Thank you Lord Piotr for a performance well done and a beautiful tribute. Lord Piotr will be receiving this North Woods inspired plague mask key chain hand-made by Baroness Genrose for his efforts.
The Baroness has a new challenge for July. We're going to change the hash-tag to #NWGold50. You have until the Saturday before July's Home Court (Sunday, July 26 at 7:00 pm) to post a North Woods photo. This could be anything: at home, out in the woods (Lucien - you were a day early!), near water, in water, in garb, out of garb (please no nudies), showing humans, showing scenery, showing both, showing doing, showing not doing. Show me YOUR North Woods in pictures! Remember to tag it #NWGold50 or email it to North Woods.Baroness@Midrealm.org

We were invited to speak to the Populace (in 60 seconds or less - very hard for His Excellency):
Aliyah - We are very grateful to TRM for giving us this opportunity. We have always been amazed by the people of North Woods and have not
been shy about saying so. During this global health crisis you have risen to new heights of caring, compassion, and creativity. We have
witnessed the rise of new leaders and the growing strength of those who already lead.
Áindle - This year was supposed to be the celebration of our 50th anniversary. What we have seen is that the true gold in our Barony is its people. We can never express adequately how how proud we are of all of you and what you have done over the past 50 years. You continue to shine like the sun in the Baronial Arms.

Yesterday was the Pentamere Academy of Defense (PAoD) run by the Canton of Ealdnordwuda. As usual, the event was great fun - good classes, different tournaments all day (Congratulations to all the winners!), good food, and better company. Thank you! Please indulge me by reading further.
The SCA is amazing. Yes, there are problems, but there is so much more. There is a history of coming together in times of need. The rapier community is doing this now.
from an earlier post in Ealdnordwuda
The new year has unfortunately seen a great tragedy for one in our community. Warder Gallien and his family have lost their home and possessions to tragic circumstances. To aid in their recovery, gear maintenance kits will be sold as a fund raiser.
Kits are still be available. They are $20.
Rust Erasers are $4.
Sanding blocks $1.

We were so happy to attend the Coronation of Their Majesties Seto-Heika and Reina Ynes. There were severe storms that had us spending the night over an hour away from the event and just arriving in time for morning court. His Majesty has adopted a Japanese persona which is not commonly known to the populace of the -idrealm . We are so proud of the members of our Barony - Mono no Aware. They did an outstanding job of providing information throughout the day on the culture in period. This is in addition to the work they did prior to the event in publishing guidance to the populace on proper clothing to fit His Majesty's persona. I wore a Hap-pi Coat in honor of His Majesty while Aliyah wore our 14th Century European clothing to honor Her Majesty. The Baron was able to spend the full day learning how to make Viking Jewelry from copper.
The Baroness had other duties that prevented her from attending until the evening for court and 'feast'. (See Pferdestadt Rapier Classic Presents Tournament of Defense for more information.)The format was a full day in a single class learning a new skill. This allowed us to really learn a new skill. Greetings North Woods!
It was an interesting war for your
Baron and Baroness. Physical limitations prevented us from participating
in many activites. However, we were able to see our populace and Baronial
representatives bring honor to the Barony. The Chili Cook Off and Euchre
Tournament had limited attendance as few wanted to venture out in the
thunderstorm passing through at the same time. Is was defiantly a successful
venture which we will continue. The Knowne World Baronial Rapier was
also a rainy affair, yet still was a great event. Our thanks to Warder
Kata Aragunnrsdottir for being the Event Steward again. The left over
chili from the cook-off was a crowd pleaser as many had attended the
just completed Armored event. That we plan to continue as well.
We had a few 'pop-up' courts during Pennsic, with the following awards bestowed:

It was an interesting day at Baron Wars. Baron Rannoff filled in as the North Woods Champion to start the Heavy war points battle (and won!)
The rapier war point this year was a battle matching the Heavy battle. Our Rapier Champion Sugawara also won to kick off the fighting!
The fighting was honorable and skillful on both sides. Kudos to all!
The Archery point was a populace shoot.
What made the day interesting was Áindle got stung in the face by his lower lip at the toast at the start of the Heavy War Point. Áindle was able to participate in the Archery War Point and also had fun with thrown weapons. Áindle received an Altenberg Bolt from Baron Raymond for inspiring him at the -idrealm 50th celebration. Áindle is very humbled by this; as Baron Raymond inspires him.
The result of the day's war points: North Woods won the Heavy and Rapier battles, Andelcrag won the Archery Shoot. This means the Baronial Border War Cup is in the possession of North Woods this year.
Click here to see more pictures of the cup.As His Majesty attended the event this year, there was a Royal court. His Majesty Edmund allowed us to install our new Thrown Weapons Champion - Brutus. Forester Kestral Altara von Barton has become a member of the Baronial Brigade. We thank her for her outstanding service to the Barony and the Dream!

Back to the event where we became Baron and Baroness of North Woods!
We were happy to have Their Majesties A'kos and Bella at our family event. They held a noon court where many youth awards were given. Our youth fighters had a great time fighting His Majesty. Unfortunately, the demands of Royalty had them leave before the Duckling Race. So our cousin's of Roaring Wastes - Baron Eamon and Baroness Isabella joined our family to set the time. We thank them for their most excellent assistance.
The Baron was able to participate in some of the activities of the day: with a grand group of young musicians, he petted the drums in the Drum Petting Zoo; threw some knives at the thrown weapons range; played Kubb with our wonderful youth; enjoyed Root Beer at the Ruin Your Dinner Ice Cream Social; and had good seats for both Courts where he got to see the populace's faces as they received their awards.
The Baroness taught Smelly Science; talked with the participants of the A&S competition; spent time with the populace; and had a good seat for watching the Duckling Race and Plague Game; and had great seat for both Courts where she got to see the populace's faces as they received their awards.
The Baronial business conducted was having the honor and pleasure of distributing the It Takes My Child To Raze A Village XI awards.

Greetings North Woods!
We had a grand day at Clancy Day. The highlight of the day for the Baron was fencing with Lord Ottar, the person Ottar's Cup was named after. The Baroness was the Signet for the Court, so was occupied with the duties related to that position. It was a pleasure to meet Their Excellencies of Ealdormere King Evander and Queen Marion.
There was no Baronial business conducted. No gentles from North Woods were given awards from the Crown.

We spent the event on team Damiana and Tim. We were a non-competitive team. THL Siri was the one who pulled it all together and led the team. When THL Siri was pulled for other commitments, Lady Tess stepped up to keep us on track. Many thanks to the fellow members of the team - Baroness Dulcina, THL SæhildR, THL Kiar and Lord Alaric. There are many who contributed materials for the project and without their aid, we would not have been so successful. For our efforts, we received the Baronesses' award from the Baronesses of Roaring Wastes.

The first Grand Tour - A Taste of 13th Century Europe is now
one for the history books. Despite some last minute site renovation
inconvenience and the kitchen being double-booked, the event was
well received by those who participated.
Armored (Adult and Youth)
and Rapier fighters got as much List time as they wanted to practice,
fight, teach and learn. All final bouts were fought during feast.
The final youth bout was between Sophie of IronWolf and Nico of
WealdLake. Nico was the victor. The Armored combat final was an
IronWolf face off between Canyden and Horatio.
Lady Bryn Archer
will be having words with Lord Canyden. The Rapier final was a Judicial
bout to settle a dispute between Their Excellencies of North Woods
with Lord Horatio Championing Her Excellency and Nathan Crocker
Championing His Excellency. It was decided that Her Excellency "is
always right." (I kind of liked that.). All combatant victors received
SCAdian-made drinkware as their prize.
A&S classes were diverse
and well attended. They covered Portable Soup taught by Lord Horatio,
Medieval Hygiene by Lady Bryn and Lord Horatio, Conquering Fear
of A&S by Baroness Aliyah, Finger Loop Braiding by Lady Endlin,
and Inkle Weaving by Lady Bryn. THL SæhildR taught two classes:
13th Century Learning - A Medieval Cambridge University Education
and 13th Century Games and Past-Times.
Her Ladyship Siri Toivosdotter
and the Roaring Wastrels played period music ALL day!(And allowed
the Baron to sit in with his drum fr a few sets.) A&S had some
amazing entries in the general category and 4 exceptional entries
in the 13th Century or Older Dessert Competition. Helena Falkenstein
was the A&S Dessert Competition winner and received an Italian
Olive Wood serving board with a small ceramic platter decorated
with Medieval style art.
Congratulations to all the Victors and
Champions. The event ended with a four-course culinary tour of 13th
Century Europe researched and prepared by Lady Helena with the help
of her kitchen staff. The food was beautifully presented and delicious
and the timing of service spot on. The Roaring Wastrels provided
period dinner music that included a sing-along.
The Pirate Crew,
captained by Lady Dana, was invaluable and greatly appreciated.
Thank you to all who offered their time and efforts.
The event staff for The Grand Tour was recognized and thanked.
Congratulations and thank you to The Honorable Lady Siri Toivosdotter who agreed to be the Baronial Adult Arts and Sciences Champion. Well deserved!
Finnian McFinn received his induction into the Order of the Howling Wolf.
The Order of the Shimmering Leaf was instituted.
This is to be an A&S award of the Barony, given by the Baron and Baroness at their discretion. As this is an award it may be bestowed more than once. More on this award is posted on the awards page of this site.

Just returned home from Call of the Waterhorse! As always it was a wonderful event full of great friends; great fighting; lots of throwing of knives, axes, and frying pans; and an impressive array of Archery skills.
Thank you again to all those who made this event possible, who worked the event, who gave assistance when and where it was needed, and all who came to play. Lady Ariss, once again attempted murder by overfeeding with a very well presented and deliciously tasty feast. North Woods and friends - you are amazing!

Pennsic 47 saw many great deeds performed by the Populace of North Woods.
The Baron was able to witness the valor of our Armored Champion (Vigfuss Mjoksiglandi) in the Unbelted Battle, as well as in the Known World Baronial Armored Champions Tourney. Both the Baronial Rapier Champions (Thomas Wolfhart aka Bloodwulfen, Alonso del Mana Negro) represented the Barony well in the Known World Baronial Rapier Champions Tourney hosted by North Woods. Our Thrown Weapons Champion (Kestral Altara von Barton) finished in the top of the field as well in the Known World Thrown Weapons Champions Tourney, eventho the Baron arrived late due to a misprint in the schedule (they listed the end time as the start time.) Our Baronial Archery Champion was not able to attend, so the Baron was able to watch Helena Falkenstein who was gracious enough to step to the line and represent us in the Known World Baronial Archery Champions Tourney. Your Baroness and Baron cannot be more proud to have you all represent Our Barony.
The Baroness was not able to watch the Champions (except at the Baronial Tournaments) as she was representing us in the Arts and Sciences at the A&S display and as a member of the A&S War Point team selected by the Crown to represent Midrealm. She and her fellow team members received many accolades from the judges and the various Royals attending the War Point competition. In addition, she taught a couple classes at Pennsic University.
Warder Kata Aragunnrsdottir was the Event Steward for the Known World Rapier Tourney with many North Woods' Rapier Marshals assisting her. Baroness Dulcinea Maria Magdalena von Muhlberg y Aguilar, Baron Odo de Eu, Lady Odelia of White Waters and Tonis served the Barons and Baronesses in attendance at the Rapier Tourney. They made us look like outstanding hosts!
Lady Kestral was the Marshal In Charge for Thrown Weapons at this year's Pennsic.
Sir Osric Eisenwulf, Sargent Vigfuss Mjoksiglandi, Warder Thomas Wolfhart aka Bloodwulfen, Lord Alonso del Mana Negro, Lord Lambert de Perreth, Lady Helena Falkenstein, and Lord Owen MacDonald were all caught helping out when they thought no one was looking!
THL SæhildR BarngodR held It Takes My Child To Raze A Village Pennsic edition in Midrealm Royal. She also taught a couple classes at Pennsic University.
In addition to serving at the Known World Baronial Rapier Tourney, Baroness Dulcinea Maria Magdalena von Muhlberg y Aguilar judged the A&S War Point, sat at Pennsic University Point and served in Midrealm Royal as Peer on Duty. She also helped make beer and soda served at the Disney Party and Midrealm Court.
Baron Baron Odo de Eu also served as Midrealm Gate guard and Peer on Duty, provided soda and tended bar at Midrealm Court, in addition to his playing "cabana boy" at the Known World Baronial Rapier Tourney.
THL Artimisia Lacebrayder was User Support for the THING registration system and part of the Sr. Staff team for Pennsic University/University Point.
Dame Kriemhilt von Ebersberg performed two Peer on Duty shifts (including Opening Ceremonies).
Baroness Gwenllyen the Minstrel was the assistant to the registrar for Pennsic University. She also taught 9 hours of lace, 3 hours of dance, ran the book lovers tea, and ran a ball. She helped at closing time at Pennsic University all but two days. On fiber day, she made lace as Artisan's Row.
Sugawara No Tokinira won the Japanese Katana Tourney and also was awarded the Most Honorable Fighter award.
Tangwystl Verch Gruffydd taught a class at Pennsic University.
THL Morgaine nic Fhrannsaidh retained for Her Royal Highness and organized/cooked a meal for those on the Midrealm Royal food plan.
Lady Æsa Þosdottir either was retaining for their Royal Highnesses or was helping with cooking for Midrealm encampment.
And those are just what We know.
At the Pennsic Baronial Court:
Owen MacDonald, Kata Aragunnrsdottir,
and Sugawara No Tokinira were all made members of the Baronial Brigade.

Tyger Hunt/Ale to the Victors was an awesome weekend. Yes, it was hot and hotter, but the fellowship and fun was blazing. The visitors were curious and very willing to engage in conversation with many interesting questions.
Thank you to everyone who worked before, during, and after the event. Special thanks: to Michelle Hogan for taking such good care of us; to Baroness Gwenllyen for an amazing Ale to the Victors; to THL Artimisia Lacebrayder, Baroness Catherine of Diva, and Baroness Gwynnyd of York for judging A&S at Ale; and to HRH Bella Roisin OCoilleain for sponsoring an Ale team and playing that game with us with such enthusiasm.
Congratulations to HE Áindle and his team for winning Ale to the Victors. His team snagged many extra points by retaining for TRH. Even though he was unsuccessful in snagging several members of my team and one adorable munchkin from HRH Bella his team excelled and won the day. Thank you to all the Ale participants.
One final thought - North Woods, you blow us away! We have said many times that the Barony is home to some amazing people and you proved that once again this weekend!

We had lovely time at Baron Wars yesterday. Weather mostly cooperated and the hospitality of the Canton of Marche of the Marshes and the Barony of Red Spears was fantastic. We were excited to see a good turn out of North Woods' folks at the event. The Siege of the Shire of Talenval will continue under the direction of Their Excellencies Ivar and Marina with the support of North Woods, Cynnabar and Andelcrag. Unfortunately, Roaring Wastes was not in attendance and therefore the taxes for Talenval are only being quadrupled to support the Siege expenses of these four Pentamere baronies.
Seriously - THANK YOU Talenval for an amazing day and awesome weather! The equestrian demonstration and obstacle course were phenomenal! Truly hope to see more of this group. The armored combat was vigorously fought and rapier contestants steeled themselves in the "back alley" which was won by Master Max. Nathaniel (our new youth Thrown Weapons Champion) won the day and received a set of "gilded" throwing knives. Well Done Everyone!
